First it used NHL players, then cartoon superheroes. Now BlackBerry maker Research in Motion is adding something else to the marketing mix as it tries to gets its groove back: The satirical, bawdy minds behind CollegeHumor.com In a posting on the company website, RIM announced this week that Amir Blumenfeld and Streeter Seidell would be joining its “Challenge Council,” a marketing effort aimed at younger consumers. The CollegeHumor website is filled with such postings as “13 sexy Harry Potter tattoos,” “Sexual History Carfax,” and a video portraying a faux-Mary Kate Olsen being thrown in jail by a beefy guard.
“New Challenge Council Members Streeter and Amir are about to shut down BlackBerry trash talk once and for all. Check out their bios and sign up to be the first to know when these guys start putting BlackBerry naysayers on blast,” the RIM website said. In an emailed statement, RIM said the CollegeHumor founders will collaborate with users (and a few celebrities doing cameos) to create five videos over the next three months, each one dispelling a “myth” about BlackBerrys.
