In the pitched battle for the GTA grocery market, with Walmart beefing
up on groceries and Target set to sell them in stores opening in 2013, Anthony
Longo stands out quietly. The chain is in expansion mode, more than doubling
the number of stores in the GTA since 2000.
The new 48,000-square-foot Leaside
store opening Aug. 22 brings the number of Longo’s stores to 25, all in
Ontario. In addition to amenities familiar to Longo’s shoppers, including a
salad bar and hot take-away meals, made-to-order pizza, chocolatiers, butchers
and cheese masters, the Leaside location features a greatly expanded section of
gluten-free products and a large fresh-chopped veggie bar.
Longo’s is competing
not only for groceries, but for money that would otherwise be spent at
quick-serve restaurants like Tim Hortons or McDonalds or fast casual restaurant
like Freshii, Mucho Burrito and Williams Fresh Café.
