The Global Patent Wars: why do billion dollar legal battles of Apple, Samsung, Microsoft and Google matter?

THESTAR.COM

Armies of black-suited lawyers have been deployed, firing injunctions like machine guns in the billion-dollar legal battlefields of tech giants like Google, Samsung, HTC, RIM, Oracle and Motorola. Welcome to the Global Patent Wars. Apple v. Samsung: Apple just launched a huge U.S. lawsuit against Samsung involving 8 patents and 17 products. They also want to halt sales of Samsung’s latest phone, the Galaxy Nexus. Oracle v. Google: Oracle is suing Google over the use of Java in Android and the case could go trial in a California court this April. Motorola v. Apple: Filed in Florida this January, Motorola wants an injunction against the iPhone 4S and the iCloud over six patents.

Apple and Google haven’t gone head to head yet, though Mueller says “a direct legal clash increasingly appears to be inevitable.” If patent courts grant preliminary injunctions, that means certain mobile phones or tablets will be taken off the market. Consumers might also get hit with higher prices. Google’s Drummond has said “consumers could face rising costs for Android devices — and fewer choices for their next phone.” But Mueller disagrees, saying the competition means mobile phone prices are likely to decrease.
